31th St. House

Completed 1993

The 31st Street House is a remodel and addition to a 1930's cottage. Throughout the house, changes were made in both traditional and more modern styles that blur the line between the old and the new. The original plan, of small discrete rooms, was reorganized into a more open plan, linear scheme, connecting varied outdoor living spaces. The addition to the house forms the third side of the major courtyard. Inspired by the work of Gill, a glassy bedroom sits atop thick, sloping walls that define an outdoor dining room. The stucco forms are undecorated and recall both modern and traditional Spanish architecture of Southern California. This house is 1,700 square foot.
