| Completed 1998 Slideshow The 5th Street Family Housing project comprises thirty-two units of affordable family housing. Twenty-two units are three bedroom townhouses located at ground level. The remaining units are two and four bedroom disabled access units that are located above the townhouses. While it may appear counterintuitive to place the disabled access and larger units on the third floor, this organization still provides elevator access for these residents to the lower parking level, while requiring only one above-grade access walkway. By locating the townhouses on the ground floor, we are able to take advantage of the large side yards to provide private, generous outdoor spaces for the majority of the units. The footprint of the townhouses is sufficient to also allow for large decks to the third floor units. The buildings are organized around a common space with play equipment for the children and an internal walk street. We wanted front doors and kitchen windows looking out onto these open spaces to foster neighborliness and to provide "eyes on the street." The client for this affordable housing project is the Community Corporation of Santa Monica. Awards |
