Abbey Apartments![]() The Abbey Apartments, designed for the Skid Row Housing Trust, is a 115-unit five-story affordable housing project in downtown Los Angeles. It consists of efficiency-type units for single occupancy, each with its own kitchenette and bathroom. The ground floor contains building lobby, parking, building management and 5,000 sq ft of supportive housing services. The second floor has generous courts surrounded by community spaces, a laundry room, recreation area, and a communal kitchen. A roof terrace on the fifth floor overlooks the courtyard. Units feature cross ventilation and the project, overall, incorporates sustainable design strategies. As part of funding requirements, the project exceeds Title 24 standards by 15 percent. The $13-million project, slated to begin construction in fall 2006, seeks to augment affordable housing opportunities in the face of a rapidly developing, gentrifying downtown market. |
