Simone Hotel

The Simone Hotel is the first new single room occupancy hotel to be built in Los Angeles in 30 years and presented a timely opportunity to reassess the building type. The historic models are practical economic buildings - at first glance, the new SRO does not appear different from these models. Further investigation reveals subtle organizational changes that provide safety, comfort and dignity for the residents. For example, lounges and kitchens that are arranged for comfort and maximized opportunity for casual social interaction and natural light. Throughout, dead-end unlit hallways are avoided and attention is given to sight lines rather than the incorporation of electronic surveillance equipment.

The 123-room, 5-story hotel was built for the nonprofit Skid Row Housing Trust and is located on Skid Row adjacent to downtown Los Angeles.
