The Northside school (pre-K through 8)
was designed for the Chicago public
school district to test small school principles
and demonstrate design strategies that
better accommodate disabled students.

The building was designed more or less from the inside out. One can follow the plywood ceilings that line the roof for the length of the buildings along folds that highlight light and shadow and mark programmed spaces. Clusters of classrooms form learning neighborhoods with a mix of grade levels and indoor playspace and outdoor discovery areas foster strong indoor/outdoor and community connections.
