The Children’s Institute, who serve children and families exposed
to violence, wanted a new headquarters that would propel
institutional change and support a holistic approach to services.

The project began with an interactive programming process that reframed the organization’s architectural expectations from “a counseling clinic offering community programs” to “a community center offering counseling services.” The project site, split by an alley, included two nondescript warehouses and a commercial building. The completed campus now houses a pre-school, administrative offices, activity spaces and counselling rooms. On a tight budget, the project leverages design opportunity from a gritty urban setting to create a sense of identity, hospitality, and collegiality.
