P.S. #1 provides a successful example of
the potential of the small school philosophy;
the campus comprises infill lots on either
side of an alley linked by a second level bridge.

Site constraints like the dividing alley were parlayed into assets like the bridge, which has become a favorite playspace for students. By design the architecture of the school promotes sustainability, curiosity, and implicit learning. Hyperbolic paraboloid roofs delineated by exposed open web joists, for example, allow students to trace how a column holds up a beam and a beam a roof. Classrooms are daylit and cross-ventilated and each room also has adjacent outdoor space to meaningfully reinforce the value of the outdoor environment and collapse the boundary between work and play.
